OutTakes

These are a few of the shots we decided not to use for our 'Interview' magazine front cover. When I took these photographs I experimented with all sorts of different angles and expressions, I wanted to create a kind of 60s vibe to the photos inspired by the background of the Intervieww publication being fropm Andy Wrhol. When it came to edditing the final piece we wanted to make it as 'pop art' inspired as possible for a modern magazine.

Romantic Films (History)

Romantic films have been around since the late 19th century and although first silent black and white movies have always involved passion, emotion and the affectionate involvement of two main characters and their journey, they often involve the theme and idea of love at first sight, as well as other themes that romantic films could choose to take on these include; unrequited love, obsessive love, sentimental love, forbidden love, sexual and passionate love and tragic love.
Romantic films have evolved over time yet still often include similar plots and cross-over, most plots involved overcoming obstacles such as physical illness, psychological restraints or family that threaten to break the couples love.
Brief Encounter is one of the earliest romance films and is a 1945 film and one of the first landmark British Film about the conventions of British Suburban Life at the period, it centred a house wife who found real love, instead of the polite arrangement between her and her husband and how it can bring unexpected emotions when taken away. It is a film told in first person where the main character ‘Laura’ has a ‘brief encounter’ with another passenger at a train station and decides to meet each other once more. They carry on meeting until their fondness for each other is turning into undeniable love. In the final scene Laura’s bland but kind husband Fred suddenly shows how he has noticed her distress and holds her in his arms,

Dirty Dancing
is another very iconic movie and is from 1987 although based in the summer of 1963 it is about the development of a crush that the main female role ‘Baby’ has on the dance instructor ‘Johnny’ at her summer holiday resort. She becomes a substitute dance partner and a romance begins to develop although both ‘Baby’s family and the resort threaten to separate the two from being together. In the end of the film and after being fired Johnny returns to the resort to perform the iconic ‘I’ve had the time of my life’ and the problems are resolved.

Titanic is a 1997 America Romance and disaster movie based on the idea of romance on the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS titanic. In this film social class plays the obstacle of their romance as well as the disaster. With the leading female character Rose being a first-class passenger boarding the ship with her fiancĂ© Cal, the male role is a simple artist named Jack who won his ticket for the voyage. After developing a clear fondness for one another Cal forbids Rose to see Jack, although Rose now realises she much prefers Jacks Company over Cal’s even with his third-class manner. She meets up with him and makes love in some of the final moments before the wreckage, when they see the boat hit the iceberg they run off to worn Rose’s mother and Cal. Cal’s jealous character threatens the couple with a gun and after riding the broken ship into the ocean Rose is saved and Jack is left dying from hypothermia.
Dear John is a 2010 American romantic film, and is an adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s novel, it follows the life of a soldier who falls in love with a simple young woman within the two weeks he is granted home stay, they decided to exchange letters to each other after he is deployed to war for a year. The year suddenly turns into longer and longer and the two drift apart, the girl marries but her husband gets ill and John (the soldier) returns wounded and helps her raise the funds to make him healthier this doesn’t work and he dies, and in the last scene they see each other outside a coffee shop make eye-contact and they both hug each other.

Film Titles

when it came to deciding on what to name our film, the group hit a brick wall, we didn't have a clue. because our film trailer comes from a Romantic movie we wanted to combine love words with words related to prison, giving a hint to what happens in the film. we started brainstorming ideas for this and thought a pun would be a good technique to look at, these are some of the ideas we came up with;

we finally decided on the idea of the name 'intimate' which includes an anagram of the phrase in-mate which i think works really well with the ideal plot of the film. when we create the design of the title we will work on separating the two words so the audience are aware of both of the hidden words coming from      title.

these are two of the ideas we had for the film title. i think this technique works really well with the name of the film, and is therefore effective.

Magazine Covers

On the market today many film magazines are published to reveal the latest hits on the cinema screen to ensure a large swarm of people go check out the latest' it is seen as a great honour to be mentioned or featured in a top film magazine and generally every film that reaches cinema is mentioned in at least one great film magazine, for our project we are going to create a film magazine featuring our movie and in this post I am going to look at two very different film magazine genres.

first the largest film magazine on the british market

Empire is a British film magazine published monthly since 1989, it is the biggest selling film magazine in Britain and consistently outsells its nearest market rival ‘Total Film’ it reviews both mainstream films and art films but feature articles often focus on large blockbusters. The target audience for tis film is largely male and images as well as the text in the magazine ensure this is relatable.

and now an artistic American magazine

Interview Magazine is the film magazine we will use in our project out of preference, this magazine combines knowledge of the latest films, music and fashion in one magazine and the films it mainly focuses on are indie movies and small productions similar to the one were planning on making. It is an American magazine which was originally founded in 1969 by pop’ artist Andy Warhol. The magazine focuses on conversations between some of the worlds biggest and most influential celebrities, artists, actors, musicians and creative thinkers. The publication influenced our decisions because of the creativeness and design it uses, and influenced our choices by the design of the front covers.

Initial Ideas

After researching the number of different film genres we could use when creating our film trailer we finally chose the idea of making a 'romantic' trailer the plot for the film will be sad as although we did look into creating a 'romantic comedy' we realized without having a natural comedian in the group to crack a joke every second this would be some what difficult. Romance films are very popular with teenage girls and young women who long for their 'prince charming' to sweep them of their feet and not just the fictional stars in the film they love. all being teenage girls we thought this genre would be the one we'd be most connected to so let the romance begin...

Film Institutions:
Film insitutions are basically the production companies which are used to create a movie. There are many different production companies and generally each insitution has it's own specific genre they choose to produce. for example Horror films generally have different insititutions when compared to comedy films. for my Romance movie I can choose from a number of insitutions including:

after looking at the many film institutions we could use, we decided on using both 'Focus Features' and 'Paramount Vintage' because for the type of romantic film we plan on creating these are the two institutions I think in real-life productions would produce a film like ours.

Trailer Research

Romantic Comedy Trailers
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Trailer
Bridget Jones is a classic romantic comedy', in which thousands upon thousands of women can relate to which is why the film and the book that the film is based on is so popular.
As this is the sequel to the first Bridget Jones movie the film opens with the voiceover of Bridget Jones saying "another year another diary" convey the sense of 'we've been here before' the trailer then goes into it's first humorous scene and joke with an elderly upper class man; "the spotted dick rather finished me off actually" the trailer then moves forward with joke after joke and scene after scene. Until the non-characterised voice over starts with "Theres no-one quite like Bridget jones (pause. more humorous scenes) for taking a perfect situation (pause.more humorous scenes) and making it impossibly complicated" The film then climaxes with Bridget's problems which in the trailer she say's and then the trailer cuts to evidence of what she is saying for example:
Bridget: "I can't ski"- cuts to Bridget falling of ski lift
Birdget: "I embarass you" cuts to Birdget turning up to a party with a very red and blotchy complexion
Bridget: "and yes i will always be just a little bit fat"

The trailer for this film follows many conventions which are both familiar and sterotypical to the rom com genre.

What Happens in Vegas Trailer
What Happens in Vegas is another Romantic Comedy, made very popular by the target audience. in this film the two leading characters make a drunken mistake and get hitched in vegas after just meeting, they decide to divorce until leading male played by Ashton Kutcher wins the jackpot gambling... the trailer opens with  the leading female 'Joy' played by Cameron Diaz getting dumped by her now ex fiance and then the voiceover narrating the scene "Joy just got dumped" and then male role 'jack' getting sacked by his boss/dad both scenes have humorous punchlines which immediately draws the audience in to making them want to watch further; the voiceover carries on by saying "Jack just got canned". Cross cutting is then used going back and fourth from Joy to Jack as they realise that what they need is a trip to Vegas. fast forward to vegas and the trailer continues with drunken clips of 'Joy' sliding on a bar top and the two meeting for the first time; the voiceover continues with "They were strangers...looking for a night to remember" the punchline of the voiceover ends with "what they got was a morning after they'd never forget" as the two realise they got married. decide to divorce and then see Jack win $3,000,000 and Joy suddenly having a change hearts with the line"were married now remember" the trailer goes on to the court case where the jackpot is frozen and the two are given a 'months worth of marriage' the music changes to reflect the mood the trailer continues with scenes of marriage counselling, and pranks they pull on each-other to ensure they get the whole $3,000,000 when the voiceover continues "They had 3 million reasons to stay together...for better...or for worse" the music changes again as they apparently start falling for each-other.. predictable but wh cares?
Romantic Trailers
   Like Crazy Trailer

Like Crazy is a traditional Romantic Film about two strangers falling in love an American Man and an English student that is until her visa runs out and she is forced back to England and without him being able to move to England they are force to start life again. the trailer begins with the two together and Jacob (male lead) asking Anna to read him a book the trailer then cuts and the music begins with "can't help falling in love with you" and Anna is used as a voiceover begins "I thought I understood it.. but i didn't" scenes cut of the couple having fun together on go-karts, shopping etc. "only the idea of it.. of you and me" more scenes of them at the beach, holding hands until the climax of the trailer when Jacob asks "What are we going to do when your visa runs out" and Anna answering "Don't think about it" the music ends briefly during the scene and then starts again when the trailer ends into decline and Anna heads back to England seen getting into a black cab. the couple ring each-other when they are apart both crying and after trying to bring Jacob to England the ultimatum is made "would it be easier if we saw other people when we were apart" and the voiceover then repeats "I thought I understood it but i didn't, not really" as the names of the actors cut through the closeup scenes and both Jacob and Anna are seen with new people "Only the smudginess of it.. the idea of it" and scenes of Jacob and Anna together are cut together again and the name of the film appears.

The Notebook trailer
The Notebook is often voted as one of the best romantic films and the trailer begins with the voiceover very fairytale like: "It was a magical summer Noah was a country boy Holly was from the city" as scenes of the two are cut together "they met at the night of the carnival" is then read but not as a voiceover but by an elderly man reading a book to his wife the trailer then cuts to the carnival and the voiceover carries on "they had nothing in common but after seeing holly that night something in Noah snapped" and he climbs the carnival wheel to ask Holly out otherwise he'll fall the trailer cuts to scenes of their date and them having fun cutting back to the elderly woman who asks "They fell in love didn't they" and answered "Yes they did" and more scenes of the couple in love are shown until Holly's mother bans her from seeing Noah "Your not to see him no more and thats final" the trailer then cuts to scenes of war and a voiceover begins "From the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks" and Holly is seen falling and dating another man, who's (by the uniform) in the army  the voiceover continues "comes a story about what we long for , what we settle for and who we are meant for"  and Holly receives a proposal from the new man and agrees to marry him, whilst arguments with Noah continue as she visits him after seeing his face in a newspaper article and asking why she hasn't heard from him after she wrote to him where noah answers "I wrote to you everyday for a year" the film trailer then introduces the characters and the name of the film appears.
